More than 2.9 million students now attend charter public schools, according to a report released by the National Alliance. U.S. charter schools are serving an estimated 250,000 new students in 2015-16. Enrollment in charter public schools has grown sixfold in the past 15 years.
The report includes a list of estimated 2015-16 charter school student enrollment by state. California led the nation with the highest student enrollment at about 581,100 students. Other states reporting high estimated charter school enrollment are Texas with 282,900 students, Florida with 282,500 students, Arizona with 177,600 students, and Michigan with 149,100 students.
