WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools released the following statement from president and CEO Nina Rees in honor of the fourth annual School Choice Week, which is January 26th through February 1st:
School Choice Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the efforts of many who are fighting to improve our education system. For decades, public charter schools have helped expand educational options for students and families. In fact, there are now more than 2.5 million students attending nearly 6,500 charter schools.
Charter schools are some of our nations top performing schools and are based on the belief that all students are capable of achieving at a high level. These innovative schools give parents the opportunity to choose a school based on their child’s needs.
Whether its closing the achievement gap for disadvantaged students, or helping more students get into college, public charter schools have much to be proud of and parents are taking note. There are currently one million student names on charter school waiting lists. More must be done to give these families the choice and opportunity they deserve when it comes to their child’s education and the National Alliance will continue to advocate on their behalf.
Since 2010, 15 of 16 independent studies have found that students attending charter schools do better academically than their traditional school peers. Learn more about charter schools and how they perform by visiting www.publiccharters.org.
