Washington, D.C. Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, released the following statement in reaction to the Washington State Supreme Courts final ruling on states public charter school law:
"This is a devastating ruling from the Washington State Supreme Court. Over 1,100 families are uncertain about their childrens education. Hundreds of educators are uncertain about their jobs.
"We now look to the legislature to fix the glitch that allowed the court to rule against charter schools and the students they serve. We urge them to heed the voices of the state's voters who passed the state's charter law, the bipartisan group of state legislators and former attorneys general that support charters, and, most importantly, the students, parents, teachers, and leaders in charters (and those waiting to get into them). The legislature must take immediate corrective action so that schools stay open and children remain in school.
"As our partners in Washington work on a contingency plan, the National Alliance stands ready to support them to create a permanent solution that provides high-quality educational options that Washington parents want and that students deserve."
About Charter Schools
Charter schools are independent, public, and tuition-free schools that are given the freedom to be more innovative while being held accountable for advancing student achievement. Since 2010, many research studies have found that students in charter schools do better in school than their traditional school peers. For example, one study by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University found that charter schools do a better job teaching low income students, minority students, and students who are still learning English than traditional schools. Separate studies by the Center on Reinventing Public Education and Mathematica Policy Research have found that charter school students are more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college, stay in college and have higher earnings in early adulthood.
