WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced the 349 schools recognized as 2018 National Blue Ribbon School winners. Of the 300 public school winners, 20 of them are public charter schools. Blue Ribbon school awards are given based on two qualifications—a school’s progress in closing the achievement gap among student groups and exceptional overall academic performance.

National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nina Rees released the following statement:

“The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools congratulates the 20 charter schools receiving 2018 Blue Ribbon School awards! We are thrilled to see the charter school sector’s strong representation in this year’s cohort and applaud each school’s commitment to the Blue Ribbon award’s nationally recognized standard of excellence.”

Blue Ribbon Schools are honored as either “Exemplary High Performing Schools” or “Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools.” The award recipients are selected based on student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates.
