As a follow up to Erin Kaplan’s piece in the New York Times, “School Choice is the Enemy of Justice”, Amy Wilkins, senior vice president of advocacy at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools,  published a letter to the editor titled, Charter Schools and Racial Justice: School Choice is an Answer, not the Enemy”. Wilkins, the descendant of a family with deep roots in the civil rights movement, highlights how fundamental charter schools are to not only the successes of minority students but to the racial justice movement itself.  Wilkins points out that families of color choose charter schools because they provide for their children what the district historically has not; the tools to become the very citizens America says they can be.
