Position Overview
The Director of Finance is a management-level position responsible for the day to day operations of the Finance Department. General duties include overall budgeting, general ledger, AP/AR, audit support, reporting and overall fiscal management functions for the organization.
The Director of Finance must be able to travel 5% of the time.
General Duties
Manage a portfolio of federal grants and contracts
Direct the Financial strategic planning for the organization
Reporting that includes general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, and taxes
Work with the Board of Directors regarding the overall investment strategy
Working with outside consultants and the HR staff toward payroll and related taxes, updates, etc.
Administer 401(k) plan and provide appropriate reports, updates, etc.
Work with Department Leadership & Program managers to maintain and report on budgets
Finance and Accounting
Ensure accounts, ledgers, and reports comply with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
Prepare, review, and approve financial statements, reporting package, and month-end entries
Serve as the primary point of contact with outside auditors
Serve as Finance lead on tax compliance and reporting
Manage and optimize grants and indirect costs from federal and corporate sources
Recommend and implement improvements for accounting processes
Extensive financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting
Provide guidance to stakeholders on finance and accounting best practices
Financial Reporting
Plan, prepare, implement, report, and update the annual budget process and lead monthly department budget review meetings
Prepare financial forecast. Prepare and analyze financial statements
Prepare and analyze the management and general rate, indirect cost rates, and other related overhead rates
Monitor operating account balances
Review and approve monthly investment reports

Internal Controls
Develop, communicate, and update Finance and Accounting policies and procedures.
Review and update Finance SOPs to clarify roles and responsibilities
Enforce established internal controls and recommend changes as necessary
Establish the controls for assets
Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipts, payments, fixed assets, and recording transactions

Motivate and implement training programs for team members
Strengthen internal communications with staff
Develop and maintain good rapport with the various departments

Bachelor’s degree, Accounting or Finance focus preferred
3+ years experience with various finance functions
Experience in grants management and reporting
Skills and Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, and generally accepted accounting principles and practices and risk management, federal regulations and compliance for grants and contracts
Knowledge and experience working with federal grants and cooperative agreements
Familiarity with non-profit accounting practices
Solid experience in coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, fixed assets, accounting for investments, and separate entity accounting
Knowledge of DC Charter School landscape, preferred
