Alliance is one of the largest and most successful public charter school networks in the nation, operating 28 high-performing middle and high schools serving over 13,000 scholars in Los Angeles’ more educationally underserved communities. Now in our 15th school year, Alliance has a proven record of success: though our scholars come to Alliance on average four grade-levels behind in reading, 95% of Alliance graduates have been accepted to college—including 71% to a four-year university in 2019. Role Summary
Alliance College-Ready Public Schools seeks a dynamic and strategic leader to serve as its Chief People Officer (CPO). Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief People Officer will set the vision and direction for attracting, engaging, rewarding, developing, and retaining Alliance’s 1,400+ person team. The CPO is directly responsible for the strategic and tactical oversight of all aspects of talent work at Alliance, including human resources, staffing, employee relations and engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, performance management, compensation, and other talent-related strategic initiatives. The CPO will manage a five-person leadership team of talent leaders (Director of Strategic Talent Initiatives, Vice President of Staffing, Vice President of Human Resources Operations, Vice President of Employee Relations and Engagement, and Vice President of Performance Management) who in turn collectively oversee a team of over 20 staff members. This critical role will also serve as a member of Alliance’s Senior Leadership Team (Cabinet) and be a strategic partner to other home office teams as well as instructional leaders across the network.

In the first year, the Chief People Officer will be expected to:
• Establish credibility and trust with the Senior Leadership Team (Cabinet), Alliance school leaders, and other key stakeholders;
• Ensure the Talent Team is fully staffed with a high performing, diverse group of people;
• Provide the leadership necessary to coalesce the Talent Team around a clear vision and supporting strategies that align with the organization’s strategic plan;
• Improve the retention of Talent Team members and increase talent staff satisfaction on the “Best Place to Work” survey;
• Build the responsive, customer-focused Talent Team culture needed to provide high-quality support to Alliance schools and home office teams;
• Assess talent-related systems that require greater efficiency, response-time, and efficacy and take the steps necessary to identify long-term solutions;
• Continue to move forward strategic work related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and aligned compensation practices across the organization.

In the longer-term, the Chief People Officer will be expected to:
• Define a vision and corresponding strategic plan for talent work at Alliance that aligns with the organization’s next multi-year strategic plan;
• Collaboratively develop the rituals and systems to build a high performing, caring, inclusive organizational culture;
• Drive improvement in overall staff satisfaction, employee engagement and retention across Alliance schools and home office teams.

What You Will Do
The CPO and his/her team will be responsible for providing the vision, strategy, and execution in the following key areas:

Team Management
• Set the vision, goals and measures of success for the Talent Team (including the performance management, human resources, staffing, employee relations and engagement and strategic initiatives sub-teams);
• Hire, manage, and develop the Talent Team;
• Manage the Talent Team’s annual operating budget of approximately $5 million.

Organizational Leadership
• Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, playing an active and influential role in discussions and decisions about Alliance’s strategic priorities and plans;
• Serve as a strategic advisor and functional expert to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team regarding talent management strategies, initiatives and issues;
• Serve as an ambassador and advocate for the Talent Team and all people matters;
• Oversee initiatives and activities to build organizational culture;
• Provide coaching and guidance for home office team managers to continually improve effective management practices;
• Develop and implement change management strategies for large-scale organizational talent initiatives;
• Ensure that all talent-related policies, procedures and processes are aligned with the organization’s culture and values.

Performance Management
• Partner with the Vice President of Performance Management to ensure the quality implementation of Alliance’s performance management system across all levels and teams in the organization;
• Set and execute a competitive, equitable and transparent compensation strategy;
• Develop and implement a continuum of professional growth for all home office and school-based staff to foster a robust internal talent pipeline from the entry level to the leadership level; develop and expand career opportunities for all Alliance employees;
• Model and facilitate a culture of continuous learning, ensuring that staff has access to continued professional development and opportunities for growth;
• Support leaders in making key personnel decisions and develop strategic staffing plans for the organization.

Human Resources
• Partner with the Vice President of Human Resources Operations, who oversees the team responsible for benefits, compliance, credentialing, leaves of absence, workers compensation, HR data and operations, to ensure the organization complies with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations;
• Develop, oversee, and approve updates to organization-wide HR policies and procedures;
• Manage the human resources information system to track and analyze human resource related metrics.

Staffing
• Partner with the Vice President of Staffing to develop and refine Alliance’s current staffing strategy to market to and recruit staff locally and nationally, leveraging the organization’s mission, brand and value proposition;
• Ensure that every Alliance school is staffed with high-capacity, highly effective and diverse teachers and staff members;
• Evaluate the organization’s recruitment and selection models to improve effectiveness.

Employee Relations, Engagement, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
• Partner with the Vice President of Employee Relations & Engagement to ensure regular assessment and reporting on employee morale with a focus on continuous improvement and the development of positive employer/employee relationships to promote a high level of morale, motivation and retention;
• Support and develop home office and school leaders to achieve high levels of employee satisfaction and retention;
• Assess overall organizational health and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices, and work with leadership teams across Alliance to create the conditions that will ultimately lead to attracting, developing and retaining a diverse team of high performers.

• Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, high energy environment and manage complex projects, deadlines and competing priorities for a team.

Experience:
• At least 15 years of professional experience, including a track record of managing a high-performing team through layers to achieve ambitious goals; at least five years in a senior talent leadership role;
• Broad talent experience with deep experience in at least two or more of the following functional areas: recruitment/staffing/talent acquisition, human resources, performance management, employee relations and engagement, DEI and executive leadership at a large organization;
• A track record of developing and implementing innovative and progressive human capital and organizational culture systems;
• Change management experience required. Turnaround experience preferred;
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
In alignment with our commitment to equity for our scholars, Alliance is committed to equity and transparency for our team and offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience and education, as well as an employer-sponsored 403b plan annual contribution equal to 5% of regular earnings, and a comprehensive group health benefits package, including medical, dental and vision.
