In 1996, when the E-rate was created, there were only 254 public charter schools. Today, there are more than 6,000 public charter schools serving 2.3 million students in 42 states and the District of Columbia. According to our most recent survey results, nearly one million student names are on public charter school waiting lists for the 2013-14 school year. Six percent of the nation’s public schools are charter schools and five percent of the nation’s public school students attend charter schools
