National Alliance for Public Charter Schools to Co-Sponsor Outburst!

August 21, 2008

Series of High-Tech Interactive Civic Forums to Focus on National Public Policy Issues

Denver, CO. – The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools today announced it has joined as an official co-sponsor of Outburst!, a series of six high-tech interactive civic forums for young people focusing on national public policy issues.

The first forum will be held Sunday, August 24 at the University of Denver, on the eve of the Democratic National Convention. The free events are open to the public and hosted by the Alliance in partnership with the University of Denver Center for African American Policy (www.blackpolicy.org) and George Washington University's Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet (www.ipdi.org).

Among the forums’ most unique features, audience members will each have an electronic device that allows them to be instantly polled on questions posed during the session. The poll results are then immediately flashed to one of two large video screens at the venue. Additionally, audience members may participate in the interactive session by sending text messages, such as questions and comments for the panelists and audience to consider, to a second large video screen. The sessions will cover a wide range of topical issues, including education reform.

“Outburst is a dynamic, interactive event demonstrating to young students just how important it is to learn about issues, participate in the political process and make your voice heard,” said National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nelson Smith. “The Alliance is delighted to team up with Outburst to get students involved in our nation’s civic dialogue.”

Colorado State Senate Majority Leader Peter Groff and Charles Ellison, XM Radio talk show hosts of The Groff/Ellison Report, will moderate the live forums to be held at four charter schools and other public venues at the national political conventions and presidential candidate debate sites through October 15.
