Seven Words...
On Saturday, the Dem Platform committee approved a mostly-thematic [draft] that includes 874 words on education. It’s all highly combed-through. No “merit pay” but at the end of the graf on teacher comp, those who “consistently excel” will be rewarded. (Reg and Randi nod approvingly.)
And the party will “promote public charter schools that are accountable.” One gets the feeling that phrase went through more vetting than the Shanghai Communique.
Nonetheless, it’s there, and [DFERJoe] thinks it’s a great leap forward – or at least a step ahead – from 2004’s more measured support.
But I’ll bet that in his heart of hearts the presumptive nominee sees charters as more than 7/874ths of ed-reform policy. I know it’s anecdote, but one story from the campaign trail had him spotting a group of KIPPsters on a field trip and bounding across the street to meet 'n greet them and praise their school. He gets it.
If he wins, so much will depend on who he brings to DC. Sure hope he goes with his gut.
(And fer sure we’ll check out the GOP draft when available….)
