July 10: Public Charter Schools See $40 Million Increase from House Appropriations Subcommittee

July 10, 2009

Under House Appropriations Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Mark-Up

Under today’s mark-up of the FY2010 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill, public charter schools will receive $256 million to support additional new high-quality charter schools and ensure expansion of existing schools. The funding represents a $40 million increase over the current year ($216 million), or nearly 20% in added support.

“Today’s mark-up demonstrates yet again the recognition by both Congressional leaders and the Obama Administration that high-quality charter schools are worth investing in, particularly because they are  having a profound impact in raising student achievement levels in historically disadvantaged communities.”  Alliance President Nelson Smith stated. “We especially want to commend the Administration for putting such a bold request forward earlier this year, Chairman Obey (D-WI) for finding the funding to provide a $40 million increase to the charter school programs in this difficult economic time, and Chairman Miller (D-CA) for his leadership and support for charter schools.”

The mark-up occurred at a meeting of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies chaired by Chairman David Obey earlier today.  The full committee is scheduled to take this up next week.
