ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Business Officer, the Vice President of Finance will play a critical role in strategically building and leading a scalable, efficient finance organization that empowers Alliance’s pursuit of impact and scale. The Vice President of Finance is a key leader in Alliance’s Home Office, serving as a true thought partner for the Chief Business Officer and other senior leadership, and will oversee all accounting and financial activities. Bringing substantial leadership and sophisticated finance experience, he/she will lead a team to manage financial operations, controls and compliance, financial reporting, budgeting, real estate financing, school site financial support, and sustainability planning, while also streamlining and building new finance and accounting systems. The Vice President will also develop and present crucial financial information to a wide variety of constituencies, including school-based leadership teams, Home Office professionals, Alliance’s board of directors, and numerous external partners (i.e., auditors, lenders, donors, authorizers). ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Leadership

Advise the Chief Business Officer and other key members of the Leadership Team on financial planning budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy matters.
Contribute to the development of strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization. Efforts include leading long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan, assessing organizational performance against the annual budget and long-term strategy and, developing tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CBO.
Develop and present crucial financial information for Alliance board meetings and additional internal constituencies.
Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly in banking and lease negotiations.
Act as an advisor and resource for schools when questions arise regarding budgets, financial reports, accounts payable invoices, and other accounting/finance related matters

Team Development

Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the departments goals and objectives
Establish and monitor Finance and Accounting Teams goals and performance, including participation in ongoing performance management efforts (i.e., regular feedback and support; beginning, mid, and end of year conferences; professional development).
Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.

Financial Operations

Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures.
Budget and Fiscal Monitoring
Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process.
Monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
Prepare quarterly forecasts of financial performance
Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials to all constituents including local government, Board members, internal leadership teams, school leadership teams and home office.
Treasury and Debt
Lead cash flow planning and forecasting efforts and ensure availability of funds as needed.
Oversee cash, investment, and asset management.
Oversee debt financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships.
Accounting
Supervise Alliance’s Controller to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function.
Ensure that the Finance and Accounting Teams maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and monitor the use of all funds.
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
Coordinate, in conjunction with Alliance’s Controller, audits and proper filing of tax returns.
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions (e-rate, NCLB, PCSG, etc…)
Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
Oversee the application process for government funding requests.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field.
MBA preferred
At least seven (7) years of experience in a management role in finance/accounting, with preference for non-profit experience.
Preference for experience with non-profit audits, including Federal, State, and Local compliance.
Must have experience in Federal A133 audit and knowledge of procedures and internal controls of GAAP.
