Girls’ School Principal

Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls, an affiliate of the Young Women’s Leadership Network, a national leader in girls’ education, is seeking an outstanding principal to oversee the planning, opening, and continued development of an all girls’ 6-12 grade college preparatory charter school with a focus on STEM in St. Louis, Missouri. Washington University in St. Louis serves as Hawthorn’s charter school sponsor.

The successful candidate will assure the faithful implementation of a proven model for creating postsecondary opportunities for young women who are primarily low-income and minority. (To learn more about the Young Women’s Leadership Schools and YWLN, please visit: The principal will be responsible for the school’s academic program and serve as the school’s leader in instruction and curriculum, including recruiting and supporting a first-rate faculty. The principal will report to the school’s Executive Director.

The principal will work to assure the school’s successful opening in August 2015 with a sixth and seventh grade and continued success thereafter as the school adds a new grade each year. Hawthorn seeks candidates who are master teachers, experienced in the development of challenging and innovative curricula, and able to develop teachers through distributed leadership and high impact differentiated professional development. The successful candidate must be passionate about the all girls’ model, focused on high expectations for every student, and committed to implementing highly effective daily advisory and college advising programs. The candidate will subscribe to the extended day/week/year programs for students, and a belief in the essential role of parents as partners in the education of their children. The principal must have an unfailing commitment to ensuring the success of every student in and out of the classroom, an overarching positive attitude, the desire and ability to work as a member of a team, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a dedication to supporting the school’s faculty. 1. Demonstrated track record of highly developed teaching skills including increasing student achievement using a variety of approaches to meet all students’ needs
2. Minimum five years teaching experience
3. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
4. Preferred:
• Demonstrated track record of providing effective staff development
• Demonstrated successful experiences as a building level administrator or supervisor
• Demonstrated successful experience as a secondary school principal
• Experience managing a school's budget, finance, compliance and reporting requirements
• Knowledge of research-based educational practices for urban adolescent girls
• Missouri Administrator Certification (or plans to complete such certification)
