Accountability First
DCPCSB does its job...
The Washington, DC Public Charter Schools Board voted to revoke a school's charter for financial mismanagement. Closing a school is tough, thankless work, but it's occasionally necessary in chartering. And when it's necessary, it's an indispensable part of this new form of public education.
DCPCSB is emerging as one of the best authorizers in the nation: active, conscientious, and wholly committed to the cause. In this case they proved their mettle, giving the school plenty of time to improve before moving toward revocation. DCPCSB recognizes that their responsibility isn't just to families; it's also to the public, which funds charter schools. In this case, the board upheld its end of the accountability-autonomy bargain. While it's unfortunate that many children will be affected by this closure, this move is in the best interest of these families and the future of public education.
